VelaShape is a non-invasive body contouring treatment used to smooth the appearance of cellulite and reduce circumference in areas that resist diet and exercise. It is worth being clear at the outset about what it is not: it is not a weight loss treatment.
How VelaShape works
The Candela VelaShape device combines four things in a single handpiece: infrared light, bi-polar radio frequency energy, vacuum and mechanical massage. Together these deliver deep heating to fat cells and the connective tissue and collagen fibers around them, while the vacuum and rollers manipulate the tissue.
The intent is to change how the treated area looks and feels — smoother surface texture and a reduced circumference — rather than to remove fat from the body in the way a surgical procedure would.
What areas can be treated?
VelaShape is typically used on the areas where stubborn contour concerns cluster: the abdomen, flanks, thighs and buttocks. Which areas make sense for you is a conversation to have at a consultation, since the answer depends on what specifically is bothering you.
How many sessions does it take?
A typical VelaShape course runs to around three treatment sessions. That is fewer than many contouring treatments require, which is part of its appeal, though the right number for you still depends on the area and the starting point.
Who is a good candidate?
VelaShape is generally suited to people with a Body Mass Index under 30 whose cellulite falls into the earlier stages of the standard Nurnberger-Muller classification — in other words, people who are close to their target weight and looking to refine contour and texture, not people looking to lose a significant amount of weight.
If your goal is weight loss, VelaShape is the wrong tool and we will tell you so. Because it is a medical aesthetic treatment, candidacy should be confirmed with a provider who can assess the area in person.
