Is Kybella Permanent?

Kybella works differently from most fat-reduction treatments, and the answer is genuinely more permanent than people expect — with one important caveat. The fat cells destroyed during treatment do not come back. What can change is everything around them.

How Kybella works, and why that matters for permanence

Kybella is an injectable form of deoxycholic acid, a substance the body already uses to help break down dietary fat. Injected into the pocket of fat beneath the chin, it disrupts the membranes of fat cells in that area. Those cells are cleared by the body over the following weeks and are not regenerated.

That mechanism is the reason the result holds. This is not a treatment that temporarily shrinks fat cells or tightens the skin over them — the treated cells are gone. Once you reach the contour you want, most people do not need repeat treatment of the same area.

The caveat worth understanding before you book

Destroying fat cells under the chin does not stop the remaining cells there, or anywhere else, from enlarging if you gain weight. Significant weight gain after treatment can still change how the area looks, because the cells that were not treated respond to weight the way they always did.

Aging is the other factor. Kybella addresses fat, not skin laxity. If the appearance under your chin is partly a matter of loosening skin rather than volume, removing fat alone will not address that part of it — and skin continues to change over time regardless of treatment.

So the accurate framing is: the fat reduction is lasting, but the area is still a living part of a body that gains weight and ages.

How many treatments does it take?

That depends on how much fullness is present and the result you are after, which is why it is settled at a consultation rather than quoted up front. Treatments are spaced to allow the area to settle between sessions, and many people stop once they are happy with the contour rather than working to a predetermined number.

Is it the right treatment for you?

Kybella suits people whose main concern under the chin is fullness rather than loose skin, and who are close to a weight they can maintain — not because the treatment demands it, but because a stable weight is what lets the result stay looking the way it did when you finished.

If loose skin is the larger part of what is bothering you, a consultation is the place to say so. There are other approaches for laxity, and the honest answer may be that Kybella is not the treatment that gets you where you want to go.
